“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4, NIV)
Verses like today’s used to trip me up. My heart delighted in things like money, athletic prowess, popularity, etc. I can recall praying fervently that God would make me the fastest kid in my class, because the most popular kid was also the fleetest of foot. I had to wrestle with those prayers going unanswered, because they represented the desires of my heart. What changed wasn’t my faith in God’s ability or willingness to answer prayer, but my heart.
Ezekiel 36:26 says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” This is precisely what God longs to do! When you delight in the Lord, he transforms your heart, and as a result, transforms the desires of your heart as they line up with God’s heart. Admittedly, this can be a difficult lesson to learn for those who see God more like a wish-granting genie, but God wants to give you a heart that can be molded and shaped by his Holy Spirit.
Are you discouraged from sensing prayers going unanswered? How would you define the desires of your heart? Are they in line with God’s delight of you, and desire for your holy transformation? If not, or you aren’t sure, take that as your prayer to God, and ask the Lord to help you see if the desires of your heart are in line with his. God does delight in you, and he wants to give you a new desire of your heart. Will you let him?
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for delighting in me. I confess how often the desires of my heart do not line up with yours. I know you want to transform me from the inside out, so I ask for your heart-molding hands to shape me to be more like your son and my Savior, Jesus. I pray this in his holy name. Amen.
Have an awesome day,
