“The Master said: ‘These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their hearts aren’t in it. Because they act like they’re worshiping me but don’t mean it, I’m going to step in and shock them awake, astonish them, stand them on their ears. The wise ones who had it all figured out will be exposed as fools. The smart people who thought they knew everything will turn out to know nothing.” (Isaiah 29:13-14, MSG)
Today’s verse is one that might send a shudder down the spine. God told the people they have everything backward. Their worship of God lost authenticity and became a performance, meaning it was more improtant to be seen by others at worship than seen by God in worship. Prominince, popularity, and presume power became their god as opposed to the One whose power brought creation into being with a single word. As a result, God said he was going to shock the people awake and astonish them to get back to pure worship.
There are times in all of our lives when we slip into going through the motions with our worship. Have you been there? Are you there now? Have you experienced God shocking you awake and astonishing you? God always wants you to remember who is God, and who frankly is not (you). God wants you to worship him alone — not making a big show of it — but showing your hope and love for God in a big way.
God wants us all to come back to the heart of worship where it is all about him. If you have given your worship to anything but God, make that turn back. Be astonished and amazed at the mighty works of love God, and may the temple of your life be reserved for him and him only. Otherwise, you might find yourself astonished in a different kind of way as God seeks to put everything back in its proper order.
Do you perhaps have things backwards in your worship life right now? It’s the perfect time to reset and restore the Lord as the one true God of your life.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I know I was created to worship, and all too often I worship I give my worship to things that frankly don’t deserve it. Forgive me, please. I am astonished by the works of your hand, even taking the nails in Jesus so I may be saved. Help me to discover and restore my astonishment in you so I can show your love for all us to others in a big way. I pray this in Jesus’ hole name. Amen.
