“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:12-15, NIV)
Wow! I am a friend of Jesus. Just saying that makes me so excited! Then, I stopped and really thought about it. What exactly does that mean? I pulled out my dusty Webster’s Dictionary and looked up the word, friend. There was a very basic definition — “one who likes, aids, and supports someone else.” I was really looking for something deeper. After reflecting on these words, I realized how deep they are. Jesus is there, no matter what, aiding me, and supporting me through the good and bad. Not only does He like me, He LOVES me! This is true for each and every one of us — all He asks is we love Him and Love each other. We do that by sharing His grace, love, forgiveness, and kindness to ALL we encounter. There was one more definition. When the word is capitalized, it means part of a group, “Friends of Jesus.” What a wonderful group to be a part of! All that is required is to share the friendship at home, church, work, play, in the stores…you get the idea. So, do you want to join me and spread His love today? Be a Friend!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the beautiful gift of your friendship. May I never take it for granted. I pray that I share that gift with all I meet. Let me be the kind of friend that reflects you and your love. I love you. Amen.
