“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13, NIV)
Have you ever been putting together a puzzle and ended up missing a piece? That can drive you crazy, can’t it? Looking all over the table, floor, wherever in hopes of finding that missing piece to complete the picture. But it’s more than just a picture, isn’t it? It’s a project. It’s a commitment. Similar to a relationship where you invest time and energy. Yep, a missing piece can drive you nuts.
Yesterday we looked at how living for God requires your total attention. Today’s verse is a beautiful prequel of sorts, because of what God told the prophet, Jeremiah, about seeking him…it requires seeking with your whole heart. If you only seek God half-heartedly, you’re really looking for something else first. Jesus taught, however, that we must seek God first, and then everything else falls into place (Matthew 6:33).
Is your heart divided, distracted? Is God the first thing you seek, or somewhere further down the list? Do you approach God as a complementing piece, or the entire puzzle? God is indeed the total picture that can only be seen by knowing how all the pieces fit together. So seek God first, and seek him with your whole heart. You will find him when you do.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I want to seek and find you with my whole heart. Forgive me the times I am guilty of only seeking you half-heartedly, preferring my own way as opposed to your truth. By your Holy Spirit, help me to find you, and ultimately be found in you. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
