“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? ‘I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.'” (Jeremiah 17:9-10, NIV)
How does today’s verse strike you? Especially the part that says the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure? That might be a hard thing to hear, because we romanticize the heart. We say things like the heart wants what the heart wants, as though the heart is flawless. It isn’t. We are corrupted by sin, which means we will miss the mark when left to our whims and fancies. We must learn to hear the other part of today’s verse and know that God understands the heart and the mind. THANKFULLY we live under God’s grace and mercy now so we no longer get what we deserve, but what God wants to bless us with…an eternity in heaven with him!
By God’s grace, He doesn’t just want to clean your heart, but give you a new one. Psalm 51:10 says, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” This is God’s desire, to give you a new heart and renew a steadfast spirit in you, led by his very own Holy Spirit. This is accomplished when you accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. As Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!”
Do you feel the darkness and deceitfulness of your heart? You are not a lost cause. YOU ARE NOT! Turn away from your old way of living, accept Jesus, and allow Him to make you a new creation, filling with a steadfast spirit…his very own!

Prayer: Dear Lord, it is hard for me to think about my heart being so full of darkness and deceit, but I know it is true. Forgive me. I accept your grace to save me from what I deserve, giving me a gift I could never earn on my own. I pray this in the re-creating name of Jesus. Amen.
