“Happy are those whose actions outside the Law are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Happy are those whose sin isn’t counted against them by the Lord. (Romans 4:7-8, CEB).
Today’s verses from Romans actually are quoted from King David out of Psalm 32. Paul references these verses in a section where he is emphasizing that God gives us what we need and not what we deserve. This is the essence of mercy and grace…mercy is God giving us what we need (forgiveness) and not what we deserve, because of his amazing grace, or the love we could never earn on our own. Paul emphasized that this should instill happiness and joy, because we are free to live for God in spite of all the times we don’t.
This isn’t just relevant in our relationship with God, but also with each other. We are taught that we should forgive because we are forgiven in Christ (Ephesians 4:32). 1 Peter 4:8 teaches us to love others deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins. The progression here is pretty clear: God loves and forgives you and wants you to love and forgive others. When we live this way, we will truly see how happy those who whose sins are forgiven and covered by love…ours and others!
Do you have someone in your life who needs some happiness? Who can you share the good news with that God loves and forgives them? Who can you share the good news with that you love and forgive them? Love does indeed cover a multitude of sins, so may your life be one of loving forgiveness extended toward others because of the loving forgiveness extended to you in Jesus.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the love and forgiveness you give me in Jesus. Help me to show that to others, so we all may find the happiness and joy that comes from a life lived in you. I ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
