on faith and fear

by Christy Morrow

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40)

Do you ever feel like your fears are taking over? God tells us 365 times in the bible, DO NOT FEAR. It must be really important to him. In 1 John 4, we learn that God is love. Later on in that chapter we see that “There is no fear in love.” Fear is not how God operates. If we are feeling fear, it is not of God. It says in 1 John 4:18 that “perfect love casts out/drives out fear.” I love the concept that faith and fear cannot exist in the same place at the same time. I think God is telling us to choose faith instead of listening to our fear. In other words, WE HAVE A CHOICE! A lot of times when we are afraid, we feel like we don’t have a choice. God tells us we do. But we have to intentionally make the choice to not fear. If we choose to not fear, God works in us and through us. His power flows through us when we choose to believe. We have to conquer our “mountain” of fear. We have to trust that God is with us and will help us. In Romans, it says we are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus. If you look at anything anyone has accomplished in their lives, they had to get on the other side of the “mountain” of fear. We can have peace and joy, but we have to choose to not be afraid. If you are struggling with not being afraid, ask God to help you. Rest assured, he will!
