go to the rock

by Mary Stout

I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 61:2
— Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the circumstances in your life? I think we all come to a place once in a while where the daily responsibilities seem to zap us of our energy. This is true as we get the kids ready for school in a few short weeks, start a new job, or any number of things that can upset our apple cart. Stress can be a joy stealer, can’t it?
I am reminded of when Jesus went to visit Mary and Martha. Martha was stressed out as she organized and prepared for Jesus’s visit, wasn’t she? She worried so much about the stuff being just right she forgot to enjoy the very person she was entertaining! .When the stress of the day got to be overwhelming for Martha she did what a lot of us do. She lashed out at her sister, Mary, who sat at Jesus feet. She expected Jesus to side with her. Instead Jesus gave Martha some good advice in Luke 10:41-42:
“Martha, Martha,”the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things but few things are needed—or indeed only one.
Jesus knew the value of not being distracted by the circumstances of the day and taking time to focus on what is important. He lets us know that when life gets tough as it sometimes will, our focus needs to turn to Him. He is the Rock on which we stand so when things get out of whack, take a deep breath and remember that you are never ever alone. Just look to Jesus to carry you through.
Prayer: Father God we thank you for your steadfast love that carries us through when we get stressed out. We ask forgiveness and pray that you will gently bring us back to a place of peace and calm when we are overwhelmed by the day. We pray in Jesus name, Amen
