“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17)
Let’s have a conference…
I’m not certain when I did my first solo oil change, but I know where it happened. It was at my dad’s shop, Burson Tire Company, and I was in middle school. I can’t remember the day because I did a few hundred of them, if not more than a thousand in the 90s.
My grand papa used to patrol the shop and collect ALL of the empty oil cartons we had from oil changes… they were trash… spent.. empty.. Sure, the walls of the empty carton were lined with a thin layer of oil, but once it pooled at the bottom of the carton there was maybe 1/100th of a quart of oil in there… He was after that 1%.
He would get all of those cartons and flip them upside down and collect every drop into a large oil jug… over time he’d collect enough to have a quart of oil… Before too long, he’d have collected enough for 6 quarts of oil and then he’d be able give one his trucks a “free oil change”…. “Jacob, it’s free… In that shop y’all think this is trash. This is like finding a $20 bill on the ground, bending over, and puttin’ it in your pocket.”
Doing the math be probably saved himself $100/year with all the oil changes we did and “empty” oil cartons he collected. We thought it was just another thing that showed us how much he saved everything. I’d always get a laugh working with him in his barn, seeing in the corner a dozen 1 quart oil cartons flipped upside down into larger containers.
This weekend while changing my oil, I accidentally did the same thing… See it in the picture… and All by myself in my garage, I lost it for a few seconds.. Not gonna lie, I cried kinda hard for 10 seconds… I felt him there… I could hear his voice..
25 years later this lesson preached… Papa passed this week… We buried him Wednesday.. But yesterday, after a tough 3 months for us in my house, he taught me to take advantage of every drop of life… Don’t waste any effort or time… Be patient… Be persistent… Glorify God in all things.. Don’t worry about what other people think.. When I and everyone else thinks nothing is left to give, flip life upside down and leave nothing in the jug.
