“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” (1 John 3:18, NIV)
I’m sure you are familiar with the old adage, actions speak louder than words. That line has its roots in today’s passage about how we are to show love. John teaches that it’s one thing to say we love people, and quite another to actually love them. Talk is cheap, as they say, but the proof is in the pudding.
It goes without question that John learned this from Jesus. There is no doubt that Jesus is the epitome of congruence in belief and behavior. He taught, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35, NIV).
Later in 1 John, the apostle shared that the way we prove our love for God is how we love God’s children. As we take all of these lessons to heart, may it shape and guide our behavior. Put your love into action and live out the truth of God’s love, grace, and mercy.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for loving me. Help me to not just talk about my love, but put it into action. I ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
