“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-3, NRSV)
Scripture commonly uses the metaphor of a foot race for life. There is a definite starting point, as well as a finish line. That finish line isn’t just a location for the Jesus follower, it is a person…Jesus himself!
We see in today’s text that we are to run the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus. Each of us have our own race to run, marked out by God. There are times when it will be uphill, downhill, and on flat ground. There are times we will have to traverse rocky terrain, wetlands, and picture-perfect scenery, too. There will be times when life will seems frigid, and others blazing hot. Whatever the circumstances of the race, though, if you fix your eyes on Jesus, you’ll always be heading in the right direction, despite whatever else is happening.
Jesus is your finish line. He is the goal you are to run to. He is cheering you on, helping you keep pace, and ready to welcome you home when your time comes. Fix your eyes on Jesus and keep running!
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for giving me Jesus as my finish line. I know I will make it to you if I fix my eyes on you. I life this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.
