“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 6:3, NIV)
This week we have spent our daily water time looking at ways to set discipleship goals to change our lives and to allow God to use our lives to change the world. From concentrating our efforts on God’s ways by setting attainable and measurable goals, we’ll find the desires of our heart changing to get more in line with what God wants to accomplish in our lives. In the beginning we talked about committing our efforts to God and allowing Him to bless our plans, meaning we need new plans. Once we get those new plans based on the transformed desires of our hearts, we find that God blesses our plans and orders our steps in our new life direction. This requires faith and trust as we look at the last component of our spiritual goal setting, which is to move beyond strategy and set manageable steps to evaluate our measurable goals.
Today’s Bible lesson tells us to trust in God to make our paths straight. Let’s face it now that we’re basically two weeks into 2018, we have no idea where we’ll be this time next year. If you give your life to God, getting back to the basics of loving Him with all you have and are, and loving your neighbor as yourself, He will make your path straight so you know that you can be God’s blessing everywhere you go and in everything you do. It’s pretty inspiring, isn’t it? And considering the shortest distance between two points —where we are vs where we want to be with God— the Lord’s straight path is the way to go.
So let’s get back to the basics, shall we? Will you commit your life this year to pray for the church, the leaders God established, and the people we serve? Will you commit to participate regularly in the life of the church in worship, in outreach, and in connect events? Will you commit to give generously to God through the church for the sake of the church’s ministry of connecting to God and each other in order to change lives, because changed lives change the world? Will you share your testimony about the things you’ve witnessed where God is at work in your life and in the church? These things will change the desires of your heart, establish new plans, which you can give to God so He can order your steps. Trust God in this. When you do, He will make your path straight.
So what goals are you setting for 2018? I’d love to hear them. May we all give our best to God, as unique and individual as we are, realizing that when we commit our individual efforts to the collective purpose of connecting people to God and each other, we will experience the glory of a transformed life!
Prayer: Dear Lord, I want the path of my life to be laid out to you. Change my heart so my new plans are blessed by you, and my steps can be ordered so I go where you want me to go, connect with the people you want me to connect with, and experience the power of a transformed life. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
