“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:5-8, NKJV)
This week we are look at steps to holiness, recognizing this is what we need to be different for God. We know that we need Jesus’ help. We also know that we need to confront the obstacles in our heart and mind so we can find alignment in the way that we live and the way God wants us to go. As we keep moving down the path, we need to understand some key virtues that help us overcome our bent toward sinning.
A lot is made of the seven deadly sins (pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, laziness). They aren’t explicitly spelled out in the Bible, but the truth is there. The good news is we can find virtues to help us overcome them, much like the obstacles we discussed yesterday. There is, humility against pride; kindness against envy; abstinence against gluttony; chastity against lust; patience against anger; generosity against greed; and diligence against laziness. All of these virtues help us to experience and express love of God, neighbor, and self.
How can you look at these virtues and experience different as a result? Consider humility, kindness, abstinence, chastity, patience, generosity, and diligence in light of how you might live. Are you challenged? Are you encouraged? These virtues can help you find different as you walk down the path to holiness.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I want to be different. Help me to live with you and others in humility, kindness, abstinence, chastity, patience, generosity, and diligence. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
