“As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.” (Matthew 4:18-20, NIV)
You are called to follow Jesus. Everyone is. How does that strike you?
Today’s Bible lesson is the calling of Peter and Andrew. When Jesus called them, He called them in the midst of their daily living. They were fishermen doing what they did in their life…fishing. We read that when Jesus called, they dropped what they were doing to follow Him and learn what it meant to fish for people.
The takeaway from a passage like today’s comes down to one word: transformation, which is the essence of our current Different series. Jesus wanted to show Peter and Andrew how He could take their knowledge and skills and transform it so they could now live for introducing others to Him.
This is what Jesus wants to do in your life. He wants you to take your knowledge, skills, passions, and desires, and transform them so you aren’t living for yourself, but living for God and others. Jesus wants to take what makes you unique and special, and utilize it so your precious life can help others know they are precious to God, too. You experience this transformation by heeding Jesus’ call to follow Him and learn a new way to do life, living for Him.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your call to follow you. Help me to leave behind my old life, transforming what I know and can do, so I can learn to live for you. I ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
