“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” (1 John 4:11)
In honor of the month that we celebrate all things love with the holiday surrounding St Valentine, chocolate and flowers, I sit back and wonder if there is a ‘one size fits all’ love that would satisfy us on a day entrusted to celebrate love. There have been candied and chocolate hearts lining store shelves since December 26, 2017. The red color of Christmas has left the green and morphed into heart shapes connecting with shades of pink and purple. Cupid has found his bow and arrow and is aiming directly at couples and their wallets! Kids are searching for their favorite character to adorn the perfect Valentine card to share with their friends at school and anxiously awaiting some more yummy sweet treats!!! Florists are advertising and praying for you to order some red roses and drop some cash because it shows them some love!
Do you often think that maybe it would be easier if there were just a one size fits all type of gift you could get everyone? If chocolate and roses worked for your Mom and girlfriend or for your Dad and husband or for your little girl and the babysitter, it would be amazingly simple! Women understand this concept because it is fantastic to see One Size Fits All sometimes… as there is no size shaming and it usually looks pretty good on!!! Men can relate, sort of, because there are the one size fits all baseball caps….that make gift giving easy for your college roommate!!! But Valentine’s Day is still a time to show someone how much you care and YET, these gifts are all material and in fact some of us sit back and think we do not have someone to share a valentine with…or do we?
When God sent Jesus, He did so because He loved us ‘so’…for God so loved the world. He gave us something…His only Son, His love. It was only one gift: One perfect gift- a one size fits all type of gift given to each of us on one day. He knew each of us by name before we were born thousands of years ago and prepared this perfect one size fits all gift. Jesus fits each of us perfectly and meets us wherever and whenever we are. His word is alive and vivid and when we apply it to our lives, it brings forth shape and form to our soul. This is a gift worth sharing, and it is free! It is not material. It is love in its’ purest form. It fits everyone whether or not they can see how beautiful He radiates from their soul. So let’s share this one size fits all gift this month in honor of the love of our Savior because as 1 John 4:11 says, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
Prayer: Lord, May you guide each of us to show your love to someone today because it is You who loved us first. Thank you for loving us. Amen
