change of heart

by Beth Tidwell

“The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” Psalm 34:17-18 (NLT)

Life is full of ups and downs.  We all face trials.  We’ve all known people in situations where we say “I can’t imagine.  I don’t know how they will get through this.”   If we are honest, sometimes we allow our heart to shut down to any possibility of healing.  It’s easier to just surrender to the brokenness and let it consume us.  Healing is painful.  Healing is hard.  God knows this.  God sees.  God hears our cries.  He patiently waits on us to call out His name.  And then, He begins the healing……in HIS time, not ours.  We need to remind ourselves this when we don’t think healing will happen.   His Word gives life to us.  Do not neglect the gift of His Word. This love letter from God is the key to our hopefulness.

God allows us to experience seasons that are heartbreaking, but character-molding and spirit-enriching, and then He faithfully draws us near and heals our brokenness.  Real and lasting change is a result of these types of circumstances.  God wants to change the heart.  The world tries to begin change from the outside by use of willpower, but God is interested in change on the inside, a change of the heart. Behavior changes when your heart changes.  Relationships and priorities will change when God gets hold of your value system.  Willpower will fail us, but God will not.

God is pleased by our broken sacrifices. He knows what’s best for us. Believe this, trust in this, and make your decisions based on this.  We need God, for only He can give us a new heart, and replace our self-centeredness with His love.  God’s promise is true: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone” (Ezekiel 36:26).

You are God, You are good, forever faithful One….I will trust in You alone.
