today’s daily water is written by Robin Chance
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29, NIV)
Author Edward Bulwer-Lytton wrote, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” I would like to take this a step further and say WORDS are mightier than the sword. Words, whether spoken or written, have the ability to tear down or build up. In this day, it seems popular to say whatever we think and then add, “This is my opinion and if it offends you…..oh well.”
I realize we all have different opinions. When we voice these opinions with no concern as to how they make someone else feel, are we being the light Jesus calls us to be? Are our opinions more important than showing God’s love to everyone?
God calls us to speak words that build up and encourage. During this Lenten season, maybe, we could all try going without using words that tear down or “offend” others (whether spoken or written). Replace them with encouraging words that share God’s love and grace. What a difference we could make!
Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for setting an example as to how you want us to treat each other. May we strive daily to follow the words you speak to us. We are grateful for your love and forgiveness. We love you! Amen
