grow as a hero

by Pastor Mark Jordan

“All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah! Father of all mercy! God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.” (2 Corinthians 1:3, MSG)

Today we conclude our weekly Hero Up! series. We’ve explored keeping your bearings in Christ while serving all kinds of people; leading others into a God-saved life by following God; staying disciplined; thinking like a hero; and acting like a hero. As we conclude today, it’s important to remember we must keep growing as a hero.

The last couple days I used imagery from the Justice League movie when The Flash learns how to be a hero as a guiding image. It is applicable for today’s concept, too. Once The Flash learned how to think and act like a hero, he grew as a hero, using his special gift for the sake of others. The Flash’s growth is a hero is something that might resonate with you and me. When we first begin, we aren’t sure what to do. We start thinking and acting differently, but sometimes we still need guidance. Just like Batman helped The Flash in that scene, you need someone to help you, too…a spiritual friend and mentor who can speak truth into your life and help you see things you can’t see for yourself.

In today’s passage, we read about how God utilizes mentoring on our heroes journey. God Himself comes alongside to help us, and then leads us to someone so we can help lead them into a God-saved life. You have the distinct ability to be a hero for someone, even in the midst of the things that bring you down. God wants you to use your growth from the trials you’ve triumphed through to help others know there is hope for them, too.

It’s time to Hero Up! … are you ready? Think like a hero. Act like a hero. Grow as a hero. You do this by staying close to God, and keeping up with others. It can and will save a life, beginning with your own.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for saving me in the amazing love of Jesus. Thank you for inviting me on a mission to lead others into a God-saved life, too. Help me in all ways and all things to change my thinking and behavior so I may grow with you and help others see how they can grow, too. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
