“We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.” (Hebrews 4:15-16, MSG)
Can you recall the last time you were so terribly anxious before going to meetup with someone of influence? Maybe it was a Human Resources hiring manager? Your boss? Someone in law enforcement? A judge? How did that feel? Kinda scary, huh? It is scary when you go approach someone who has the ability to control your future for better or worse.
Today’s verse is a good one to remember, as it pertains to approaching God. The author talks about Jesus as our ultimate high priest, as one who stands between you and God. The glory of Jesus is He experienced all the ups and downs of life, yet did not succumb to sin. What our text says next is key, though — you can walk right up to God’s throne to receive what He’s ready to give: mercy and help. With confidence.
God eagerly wants to show you His mercy, and grant you His help. Remember how to understand mercy in the Bible: it’s the love of God that saves you from the punishment you deserve. This is precisely why you can approach God’s throne with confidence. God wants to help you with the things that cause you to struggle. Jesus isn’t out of touch with your reality…He’s right in the middle of it. Go to Him. Trust Him. Receive His mercy. Accept His help. You need it, and He longs to give it. So go to God confidently, and let Him change your life.
Prayer: Dear Lord, sometimes it is hard for me to remember that you are in touch with my reality, because of the times I feel so isolated and alone. Forgive me for that. I need your mercy. I need your help. Thank you for giving this to me in Jesus, and it is in His name I pray. Amen.
