developing

by Pastor Mark Jordan

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5, NIV)

I watched a movie the other day that showed a photographer go into a dark room and develop some pictures. That process used to fascinate me, but with the advent of digital photography —not to mention the quality pix I can take on my phone— I don’t think about it all that often anymore. When you took a picture, the first thing you’d get was a negative. Then you had to develop the negative into a positive by going into a darkroom and shining a light through it onto photographic paper. This turned the negative into a positive full-color photograph.

We all have darkness in our lives…those things that we’ve done, or things done to us, that darken our moods, or worse. God knows this, and wants to shine His holy and eternal light through that darkness in order to develop the full picture of His love in your life. Holiness doesn’t mean you never have any darkness, but it means you know how to let God shine His light through your negative to make a positive.

You have a story to share of hope and redemption. This is God’s story, and He wants you to share it. His light shines through the darkness, and darkness can never overcome it. Trust God. Let His light shine through you. Then, shine a His light to others so they, too, can know God is good.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your light that shines through my darkness to show the positive picture of your love for me and others. I know you want to develop me fully into a work of art that reflects your image to the world, and you do this by overcoming the darkness within. I give you my life, and trust in your light. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
