“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin….” (Zechariah 4:10a, NLT)
How has this week gone looking to do some small things to make a BIG DIFFERENCE? So far we’ve explored how this begins with love, requires prayer, calls us to worship, and is expressed in sharing with others. All of these can be tough to begin at first, especially if it is new to you. The most important thing about beginning a new discipline is simply to begin. Remember the old adage about how you eat an elephant one bite at a time. Please, don’t let a sense of being overwhelmed keep you from beginning in the first place. You have to start somewhere, so starting small might be the perfect place to begin.
Today’s verse is one that I am holding dear right now. It gives me space to be patient with myself when I don’t think my steps are as big or broad as I want them to be. And let’s be honest, when I feel that way, it’s because I’m comparing my steps to someone else’s, which isn’t fair to them or me; after all, God began a good work in me and won’t stop until it’s completed (Philippians 1:13). God doesn’t want you to look down on your own small beginnings, because He delights in the beginning. Think about that!
As you begin, you need something to help you focus. I would like to recommend one word, that you ask God to give you in prayer. Then, you use that word to frame your prayers, guide your worship, and inspire your insightful sharing with others. For me, my one word is, breakthrough. This came after a time of looking for a breakthrough in my life. When I began praying for a breakthrough, God revealed to me the ways He had already broken through. Amazing, huh? Finding your one word can really truly help you get focused on how God wants you to love, pray, worship, and share. So find it. Write it down. Post it where it will help you remember to focus. And share it as you share God’s glorious love.
I want to encourage you to share today’s daily water with your one word and a Bible verse that can help form and inform the meaning of your one word to you. I mentioned that my one word is, breakthrough. The Bible verse I use to help frame that is one I’ve shared recently from Isaiah 43:19: “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” God wants me to perceive the breakthroughs, lead into them, and share them with others.
If you need to start small, start small. Remember, small things…BIG DIFFERENCE. Don’t despise these small beginnings, but know that God takes delight when you begin. Take those small steps, feel God’s delight, and keep going. It will make a BIG DIFFERENCE. I promise.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for loving me. Forgive me for the times I despise my own small beginnings, thinking I should be farther along than I am. I know you delight when I begin, so I offer my new beginning to you right here and right now. Please give me my one word so I might use it to help focus my prayer, worship, and service to you through others. I ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
