purpose, passion, and the way

by Pastor Mark Jordan

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6, NRSV)

Today’s verse is pretty well known. Are you familiar with it? It comes toward the end of Jesus’ public ministry when he was preparing the disciples for what was ahead. He knew that tough times were coming, but they were for a purpose, and he wanted to convey to the disciples that when they found themselves discouraged and dismayed, they could remember that ‘the way, truth, and life’ wasn’t just a precept, but a person. The way to eternal life through the truth of God goes through the person of Jesus Christ, and the passion he displayed as he died on the cross for you and me.

When we think about the passion of Jesus, it literally refers to his suffering and death. He endured it, though, because of his passionate heart for the salvation of every one. His passion fueled his purpose which took him to Calvary, leading you and me to the throne of God the Father.

There is a great anonymous quote that says, “Purpose is the reason for the journey. 9E1715F3-70A6-4DA2-B5D6-9946191C9C7EPassion is the fire that lights the way.” Jesus — the light of the world — felt a passionate fire for salvation, which took him to the cross and beyond. He wants to fuel your own personal flame of passion to help show others the love and grace of God. Jesus wants to show you a purpose for living that leads others to him, and be the light that illuminates the way…his way…his very own life.

Jesus said that he is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through me. Let him ignite your passion and show you the way, so together, you can find your place at the loving throne of God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for loving me, igniting a passion for you within me, and leading me on the path to everlasting life. I believe your way is truth and life, and that’s the way I choose to go. Help me, Lord Jesus, for it’s in your name I pray. Amen.
