“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” (Zechariah 4:10a)
Today we are looking at the first part of the vision statement for Church at the Well: to be a place where you can begin your faith journey, or begin it again.
Beginning is a critical step, isn’t it? Whenever you begin a new routine or regimen, the first step is a critical action. Those first steps might seem insignificant at first, but they aren’t; especially when you are making steps toward being the best you that you can be.
Today’s verse reminds us not to despise those small steps at the beginning of our journeys. We tend to think that God is most interested in the final product, but He rejoices in seeing you begin that first step. “This reminds me of the ancient quote that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” You might bemoan how far away you are from your destination, but God longs to see you take that first step.
Our church’s vision is to be a place where you can make that beginning (or begin again if you got off the path days or decades ago). Don’t despise small beginnings, because God doesn’t. He longs to see you even begin, so take that first step!
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for your patience with me. Forgive me when I confuse my first step with my destination. Help me to know that with your each step has meaning and purpose. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
