“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21, CEB)
Trinity and Church at the Well are working through an emphasis called, “Extravagant Generosity,” based on the book by the same name. We began this in worship yesterday, and will continue through early November.
Today’s verse is one that I have wrestled with at various times in my life. On the surface, it seems simple enough; a deeper glance, however, causes you to really think about what Jesus was teaching. We tend to want to immediately put the emphasis on the heart as a way to describe the kind of things we treasure. Jesus’ wisdom indicates that your treasures reveal the location of your heart. If you’re looking and focusing on things other than God, your heart will follow. Sports, sex, substances, whatever… You might want this to be the other way around, but Jesus is spot-on. Your heart follows your eyes.
God wants your eyes to be on Him, your mind on heavenly things, and your treasure in things that will never spoil or fade. So where is your treasure? That’s where you’ll find your heart.
Prayer: Dear Lord, forgive me for the many times my treasure and heart are on the wrong things and in the wrong places. I confess it is so easy to get misplaced. Help me to focus on you, and in so doing, find my life treasuring the things you treasure. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
