“I tell you, use worldly wealth to make friends for yourselves so that when it’s gone, you will be welcomed into the eternal homes.” (Luke 16:9, CEB)
I hope you have experienced some new insight and inspiration this week as we kicked off our Extravagant Generosity emphasis. It’s my prayer that you are undertaking a spiritual EKG to track the strength and timing of your heart of generosity so you can be blessed by being a blessing.
Looking at today’s Bible verse, read how Jesus taught that you should use your financial resources to help bless others and find yourself blessed for eternity. Bringing this back to the spiritual EKG, you need a healthy rhythm for sharing your blessings. This happens in worship as you give to God through the church, and then the church serves the congregation and community with those blessings. As I taught on Sunday, the strength and timing of your spiritual heart beats as you express your gratitude for God’s generosity. You do this through (1) giving to God with no strings attached; (2) giving when and where you worship; (3) giving proportionately to what you earn; and (4) giving according to a thought-out plan, where you give to God out of what you have, and not what you have left over.
This requires a pocket change. Initially, when you think about your pockets, you stash the items you might need during your day. Whether it’s your wallet, keys, or whatever, you use your pockets to stash important items. What if you underwent a pocket change, though, where you carry the items you need to bless others as opposed to just making it through the day? Your pocket change requires a realignment of thought where your contents are meant for others and not just yourself.
We’ll pickup this line of thought next week as we think about how extravagant generosity impacts our relationships. For now, though, I want you to prepare for Sunday by working on a pocket change so you can intentionally use your blessings to bless others, God, and yourself.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for blessing me so I can bless others. Whether I see my blessings as many or mini, help me to know that everything I have can be used to bless others. I know I need to undergo a pocket change so I see what I have as a means to bless others, and be blessed myself. I pray for your help in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
