“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4, NIV)
Today’s verse can be a puzzling one if you merely read it at a surface level. It seems like if you love God, He will give you whatever you want. God is not a genie, however, who grants wishes for rubbing some mystical lamp three times…you know one for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As good as it might seem to think that loving God will give you everything your heart desires, you know if you have ever experienced some disappointment (and who hasn’t, right?) this isn’t how God works.
Today’s verse requires you to look deeper for the meaning that is far deeper than a mere surface level reading. The wisdom is this: the more you love God, the more you will find God changes your heart, and by virtue, your desires. This is a critical point! Taking delight in God doesn’t mean that God bends to your will, but draws you to bend your will to His.
What does your heart desire? Is it of God? Get in line with what God wants for your life, and you will notice your life changing radically.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for loving me, and calling me to take delight in you. Forgive me for the times I delight in things that go against your will, and permit your “no” to discourage me or dash my faith. I want to delight in the things that you delight in, and know this requires a change in my heart. With you it’s possible, and I give you thanks! In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
