me…an angel?

by Pastor Mark Jordan

When (the shepherds) had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.” (Luke 2:17-18, NIV)

Today’s verse is important. After we read about the angel’s announcement to the shepherds, and their visit to the manger, we read that they went and shared what they saw. This is huge, because the shepherds, in essence, became angels themselves!

The word, “angel,” means messenger. We often have a view of angels as cute babies with wings flying on clouds, but that isn’t very consistent with Scripture. Angels probably look more like people than we might expect, challenging our expectations.

I’m sure this was true of the angels God sent back out into the fields and towns glorifying Him in the form of the shepherds. These smelly, dirty, laborers were unlikely representatives of the great news that split open the heavens, yet, there they were.

You probably don’t think of yourself as much of an angel, but when you carry the Good News of Jesus, God can make you just that…an angel! You have the ability to share a message of hope, peace, love, and joy to a weary world. Others might look at you as an unexpected source…an unexpected angel…but you will be in good company for sure.

So will you take this holy time to do as the shepherds did and announce the presence of God? I pray you will!

Prayer: Dear Lord, I don’t often think of angels as anything other than celestial beings, yet I see there might just be a time you use me to announce your holy message. Help me, dear Lord, to do so soberly, and with great joy. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
