I hope this finds you well on this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Rev. Dr. King left an indelible impact on our culture, and his extraordinary legacy dramatically impacted our world.
One of my favorite Dr. King quotes was actually given to a group of junior high students in Philadelphia during a speech on October, 26, 1967. During that speech, he said, “Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. If you can’t be a highway, just be a trail. If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.”
When we are young, we often think we can conquer the world. What happens, though, when it feels as though the world is conquering us? We begin to believe that little inner voice that says we will never be as good or great as we once thought. You cannot allow that voice to keep you from being what God made you to be, though. This brings to mind a poster that hung in my childhood Sunday School classroom which said, “God made me and God doesn’t makes junk.”
The Message version of Romans 12:1 is really inspiring to me; check it out: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.”
I want you to embrace what God did — and still does — for you. Don’t compare yourself to someone else, or feel like you have to compete with another of God’s masterpieces. He made you to be unique, special, awesome. There are places you can go, and people you can meet, to impact the world in ways that only you can do. Seriously. Think about that. This world is forever different because you are here. From your very first cry to the last thing you said and/or did, this place is different because you are in it.
I hope you use today to be a tree, highway, and sun in someone’s life. True, you might feel like a bush, trail, or star to the world, but to someone special, you are the world. Take what might feel like your ordinary life and look for ways to be extraordinary in the places, and with the faces, where God has given you to do life. God made you. The world needs you. Be the best you that you can be, all in the name of Jesus.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for making me special, unique, awesome. Forgive me when I feel like a bush, trail, or star when you need me to be a tree, highway, or sun. I might not feel all that big to the world, but you gave your Son to die for me so I might help change the world. May I live in such a way on this day. In Jesus’ holy name I pray. Amen.
