navigate with clarity

by Pastor Mark Jordan

For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God….” (Titus 2:11-12, NLT)

I am struck by today’s verse, and the way the Apostle Paul wrote about the condition of the world. It seems that even though the world is so vastly different than it was 2,000-some-odd years ago, we still fight the same basic battle of good vs. evil. It reminds me of the old line that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The Bible gives some great advice about how to function in this messed up world. Paul’s advice starts to focus on the grace of God. Knowing that you are loved makes such a huge difference, but also directs your steps with purpose. Focusing on God, and His loving purpose, provides he conviction and clarity to see the godless sinfulness that is so easy to ensnare.

That idea of clarity is something I want to hone in on real quickly. The darkness that we see in the world is due to the shadow of evil; the shadow can only be cast, however, because there is a great light…i.e., Jesus! Jesus is the embodiment of God’s amazing grace. If you’re caught in a shadow, then seek the light to be able to clearly see the love. Focusing on God’s grace can — and will — enable you to live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God.

Prayer: Dear God, I thank you for your amazing love and grace, helping me navigate the shadows in the world. Help me to navigate to you in the darkness so I may be led by your indelible light. I want to be fully devoted to you, and live with righteous wisdom all my days. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
