I have a chronic illness. It’s called restless soul syndrome. The symptoms sound an awful lot like those in your common medication commercial. Sleeplessness. Anxiety. Dry mouth. Trouble breathing. All of it. Can you relate?
Restless soul syndrome comes from one very simple, but severe cause: sin. It is all about trying to control the uncontrollable, and feeling empty when you realize your best will never be enough. Sounds stark, but there is a reason. You were never meant to carry the burdens of life alone, and the best of God is better than anything you could ever muster.
Saint Augustine has a line that speaks volumes about this. He taught that God made us for Himself, and our souls are restless until they find rest in Him. As much as we try to find something apart from God to settle the restless soul, we participate in sin. Plain and simple. The restless soul then leads to fatigue, exasperation, and hopelessness.
We need help.
We need a Savior.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-3, NIV).
The yoke is a tool used in agriculture that links up two animals to redistribute the burden and share the load. Jesus said He wants to yoke up with you, share the load, and transform your burden from something that weighs you down to something that gives you purpose for living.
We see from here that the answer to the restless soul syndrome isn’t a lack of work, but working in the right way, and with the right person — JESUS! Jesus wants to help you to the right thing, the great thing. The temptation, though, is to get caught up being busy, and Satan is all too willing to help. Understand this: if Satan can’t make you bad, he will make you busy. Take that to the proverbial bank! Bill Bennett taught me the acronym that BUSY means “Being Under Satan’s Yoke.” When you’re busy doing good things, you miss the GREAT things that Jesus wants for you. Satan knows we all need a yoke, so he wants us to take on his instead of Christ’s. Don’t.
The rest of this week we will take a look at ways to get out from under Satan’s yoke to partner and share with Jesus. This will be essential for a soul detox and to find the relief from restless soul syndrome. Take it in. Share it with others. Let’s get ready for a life-changing journey to health and wholeness.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I suffer from restless soul syndrome. I know this isn’t from you, but from trying to fill my life with good things at the expense of the great thing with you. Forgive me. Help me to find the rest my soul seeks and craves. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
