Happy Valentine’s Day! Admittedly, I celebrate it differently these days than I did in my youth, but it is still an important day. I can’t say I’m trying to impress any young lady with my creative generosity, because I strive to do that each and every day for Tiffany, and surpass it the next day. Still, I remember fretting over the cards and candies I’d give to girls as a kid, flowers and gifts as an adolescent, and trying to figure out if there were any embedded messages in the tokens given to me. Boy, am I glad that isn’t my life anymore!
When I was in high school, and well before online dating became a thing, we did compatibility quizzes that generated a printed report of people who were most compatible with us based on their own responses to the quiz. Then, we had the “opportunity” to spend at least $1 on carnations that would be delivered by the student government to the people we chose. It was a FUNdraiser, and nothing really more. I received a few carnations, yes, and gave more than I got. Now helping my kids navigate the event that is Valentine’s Day, I see it for what it is, but admittedly so much more, because of the gift of love.
There is probably no Bible verse known as well, or quoted as frequently, as John 3:16, “For God so LOVED the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (NIV). Friends, this goes so far beyond little cards, candies, conversation hearts, and carnations…this is about CHRIST! God gave the greatest gift of LOVE — JESUS — so we can enjoy the gift of eternity.
I want to leave you with one more little nugget before signing off for this Valentine’s Day. Are you worried about compatibility? Don’t be. God made you for Himself. He knows just what you like and what makes you tick. Trust Him. Love Him. Let Him fill your life with love. It WILL change you, and change your life. I promise.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I come to you on this Valentine’s Day, thankful for the gift of love you give me in Christ Jesus. Help me to see today as something far beyond cards, candies, and carnations, and recognize it is about a created compatibility for eternity. I thank you and praise you in the name of love embodied, Jesus. Amen.
