Happy April Fools Day?

By Pastor Mark Jordan

Do not let anyone fool you. Bad people can make those who want to live good become bad.” (1 Corinthians 15:33, NLV)

Happy April Fools Day! At least I guess it’s happy…is that the right way to greet someone today? #askingforafriend

Today’s verse is a perfect one to approach this day, especially if you might be a bit gullible, like me. Written by the Apostle Paul, he warned against allowing anyone to fool you. He then followed it up with some eternal wisdom: bad people want good people to become bad. This isn’t just about corruption, however; no, not at all. When someone is caught up in doing something foolish, he or she often looks for company. Often, this is looking for validation of behavior. Pay attention here — it isn’t always about trying to make someone else bad as much as it is to try and not feel bad about self. BIG DIFFERENCE.

The larger context of today’s verse deals with resurrection. Paul did not want anyone who was coming to faith in Jesus to be deceived into thinking resurrection isn’t real or possible. Knowing Jesus was raised, and shares that same power with anyone who believes, callus people to a new, holy, and set-apart lifestyle.

Where some will be looking for ways to take advantage of the innocent and gullible, I want you to look for ways to be wise. Don’t allow yourself to get swallowed up by someone else looking for validation into their own foolishness. Succumbing to that corruption will make this April Fools Day anything but happy.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I ask for your wisdom today, so I don’t get suckered into someone else’s foolishness. I want to live for you, and recognize what this requires of me. Help me to live today for you, and share your holy wisdom with everyone I meet. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
