“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29-31, NIV)
Bedra Pechuman showed me something the other day as I was walking into the Family Life Center. It appears a sparrow built a nest inside one of the planters and laid a few eggs. I know I’ve written a series of Daily Waters on birds, but this one was too good not to share.
The sparrow is a bird common to Scripture. It was commonly used by the poor in sacrificial worship. You can see that even Jesus referenced that two sparrows were sold for a penny, which on the surface would appear to be quite un-valuable. But then He turns around and say we are more valuable than many sparrows. Before you go on and think that doesn’t say much about your worth, remember the use of the sparrow: worship. If you connect that to the original purpose you and I have — to be in a relationship with God and worship Him — then you realize something incredible…you aren’t un-valuable, but invaluable!
Following the verses we read as today’s passage, Jesus went on to teach about how worth is found in our connection to Him. In a lesson on worthiness, Jesus points to how we welcome God and others into our lives. This is a bit of a fascinating twist since sparrows can largely be solitary birds, but therein lies the lesson. Our worth is discovered in a connected relationship to God and others. Sparrows might be rather cheap in fiscal trade, but since Jesus traded His own life for you and me as a sacrifice for sin, we can know we are truly invaluable to God!
I hope that puts a smile on your face today. From the lessons we see springing forth all around us to the relevant worth we have before God, I want you to know that you matter. You really, really do. And it isn’t just that you have value, because when you realize what God paid to secure your salvation, you might just find you are invaluable!
Prayer: Dear God, I am amazed at the depth of your love. Just when I think I have swam the depths, I realize I haven’t even scratched the surface. Forgive me for the many times I take my value to you for granted, and forget what you paid to secure my salvation. I praise you as I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
