11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
How can we even begin to understand God’s perspective when it comes to light and darkness. He created the universe and all it contains. Light and dark are the same to Him. He watches over us every moment, whether day or night. But I think the psalmist is not speaking literally about day and night in this passage. He is referring to times of darkness in the soul. Sometimes you feel that the light of God’s joy is no longer in you and that darkness has overcome your heart. You can’t see your way out of the depression or the dire situations in your life. You feel defeated.
But the good news is that God is not affected by the darkness. He is as close to you as the very breath you take. The good news is that Christ has defeated death and darkness by His sacrifice on the cross. Whatever situation is overshadowing you, He is stronger. He is your hope. Continue to call on Him and remember that His light will shine on you and dispel your darkness.
