The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:28, NIV)
Today’s verse was the ‘verse of the day’ on the YouVersion Bible app a few weeks ago. As soon as I saw it, I felt a catch in my breath, because of something that happened several years ago. Tiffany suffered a miscarriage, and it was crushing to our family. Well into her second trimester, we had a living hope for that child, which we would later come to know was a boy. I read this verse, went into our closet, and wept. Vociferously.
I look back on that time, and remember how I was delivered from that pit of grief and despair. I see how God was present then, as well as now. True, things haven’t always gone as I would have preferred, but I see that when I felt as though God let me down, God never let me go.
Maybe you are in a similar spot today. Some will say get over it, move on, or pick up yourself by the proverbial bootstraps. Not all anguish is as easy to just think yourself out of. And that’s ok. If you feel like God has let you down, take heart in the fact that God promises to never let you go (click here to read John 10:28-30). And even in the deepest and darkest times, God is working to redeem those into something bigger than you could ever imagine.
So take hold of that living hope today, and know that nothing happens to you in vain. God is with you and for you. He never promised you wouldn’t go through awful times, but He did promise never to leave you in the midst of them. Hold onto that.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for saving me in the times I am crushed in spirit. It is those times when I feel you have left me that I need to hold tightly to the promise you’ll never leave. In my quiet wailing, help me to embrace the promise that nothing can snatch me out of your hand, and encourage me not to jump out myself, for you are good and promise that we will be together for eternity. I ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
