“Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.” (Psalm 90:2 & 4, NIV)
I had to read today’s verse a couple times before a lovely gift was revealed. As you read verse two, note how it is largely stated in the past tense. Then, as you read the second part, you might note the shift to the present tense. After reading a couple times, that shift became more and more striking.
Life can often feel like a striking shift between past and present; especially if you find yourself struggling with something. At first, you might be taking things in stride, but a memory suddenly happens upon you, and you’re taken to a past hurt. You might even be inclined to wonder where God is in the midst of it. I’ve been there. Have you? I’d venture a guess you know what I mean. Thankfully, the answer is right here for all to see.
God is there. God was there. God will always be there.
God is everlasting, and He is watching, even in the night.
If you are going through the darkness of the night — whether in reality or metaphorically — I hope you know that God is keeping watch over you. And, He is near. The revelation of a lovely gift can bring rise to a beautiful present — God is with you always and forever. When you deserve it, and frankly, even when you don’t. God IS there, because God IS.
May that promise give you the beautiful present you need to make today lovely.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for being with me in the midst of life’s ups and downs…in my bright days and my dark nights. I ask for the full awareness of your presence as you keep watch over me. Help me to see this as a lovely gift, offering me a beautiful present. I ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
