“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out. But I, God, search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human. I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be.” (Jeremiah 17:9-10, MSG)
Pop culture has romanticized the heart. Just think of the times you have heard, or even said, that the heart wants what the heart wants. Well, I guess that might be true, but you must be very careful about what the heart wants. If you find yourself fueled by your desires, then you need a new source of spiritual propulsion.
God’s eternal wisdom in Scripture cautions that the heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful. That might sound grim, I’ll give you that, but I imagine that if you take the time to really ponder and process the truth deep beneath the surface, you will concede. But don’t lose hope.
What we read next is that the heart is a puzzle. What God is saying here, is that all are not lost. You might struggle in wrestling with your inner light and darkness, but He doesn’t. God understands the heart of the human…He gets it…He gets you, and since God gets you, He’ll give you a new lease on life…all the pieces are there, but they need to be arranged and assembled properly.
Check out Ezekiel 36:26-27, “I’ll give you a new heart, put a new spirit in you. I’ll remove the stone heart from your body and replace it with a heart that’s God-willed, not self-willed. I’ll put my Spirit in you and make it possible for you to do what I tell you and live by my commands” (MSG). Since the heart is dark and deceitful, God wants to give you a new heart fueled by His Spirit, and not your desires. Imagine that!
If you’re struggling today with the darkness and deceit in your heart, know you are in good company…most of the human race can relate. If you don’t think you are, then check to make sure you are being deceived. Then trust in God to give you a new heart, and fuel you not with your desires, but with His very own Holy Spirit. Dear Lord let it be.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I have lived so much of my life, fueled by the desires of my heart. Forgive me. I want new spiritual propulsion…I want to be fueled by your Holy Spirit. By the power of your Spirit, and in the name of Jesus, I ask for this today. Amen.
