“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36, NIV)
Yes, yes, yes! Be merciful as God is merciful. Can you imagine how different the world would be if we lived accordingly?
Maybe we need a moment to address mercy, and delineate it from grace. Essentially, grace is God’s love He gives that you don’t deserve, where mercy is withholding the punishment that you do. Therefore, being merciful like God requires someone to look beyond restitution for the sake of reconciliation. If you’ve received mercy, you know how humbling it is. There are few things quite like it, because it shows that the relationship is more important than revenge.
Is there someone in your life who could use some mercy today? Will you extend it? It might just change both of your lives.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the mercy you extend to me. Forgive me the times I have withheld it from others, because I know how important it is. I pray for your help in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
