A Happy Birthday

by Pastor Mark Jordan

“The reality test on whether or not we love God’s children is this: Do we love God? Do we keep his commands?” (1 John 5:2, MSG)

Today is a special day…it’s Mia’s 7th birthday! We are taking time away to enjoy it in her favorite home away from home, as well as getting in some much-needed R&R before the start of school. Mia is really just now beginning to understand the concept of a birthday; in fact, she’s been anticipating this evening’s cupcake celebration for weeks. It will be sweet in more ways than one!

The verse I shared for today’s daily water is one that carried a lot of significance for me during the adoption process. I paraphrased it as a life verse by saying, “We prove our love for God by the way we love all God’s children.” We loved little Mia before we ever met her. We carried her pictures on our phones, and decorated a room for her. We gave her a place in our lives before she had ever seen anyone our faces. It was a hope and a dream of finding the togetherness of family that transcends birthplace or DNA.

God wants this to work in much the same way in our ministries to others. He wants us to creates spaces for faces we have never seen, and might likely never meet apart from our obedience to His plan. This makes the gift of family so so sweet when we all come together and realize the ties that bind are eternal and lived out in a common relationship with God.

I hope that you have a wonderful day as we celebrate Mia’s birthday. And as you go about your business, I hope you look for ways to invite new faces into our spiritual family. It might just be their birthday into God’s forever family! Let’s all look for new and exciting ways to show how we love God by loving all of His children!

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for your love of me. I know you want me to show my love for you in the way I show love to others. Help me show that love so everyone can know you want that forever family to be with you in Heaven. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
