Faith in the High Wire Act of Life

By Mary Stout

Work willingly at whatever you do,
as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
(Colossians 3:23)

Recently, I watched as Nic and Lijana Wallenda – of the famous Wallenda tight rope walking family – walked across Times Square in New York from 25 stories above street level. We watched as they navigated the high wire, talking to one another, encouraging each another, and doing something that most of us would not even attempt. What makes this brother and sister team so fascinating was their dedication to their craft, their testimony of faith, and their willingness to work hard in spite of the fear it invoked in them.

In 2017, the Wallenda family had a horrible accident that left Lijana with all the bones in her face broken, among other injuries. Today she is recovered thanks to numerous operations and therapy. I’m sure it was long hard days as she worked to heal. This high wire walk was her first attempt at performing since the accident; she never gave up, though. Throughout the walk, we could hear Lijana and her brother talking to one another, keeping one another encouraged, listening to Christian music, praying, praising God, and keeping their focus on the task ahead. They gave God the glory throughout the performance and saying, “Hallelujah Jesus,” as they walked.

Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted;
His glory is above earth and heaven. Psalm 148:13

It was a remarkable feat! In this day and age, when much of our world rejects or condemns us for our faith, Nic and Lijana showed us a great example of faith in action. They helped us see we are not alone. Our focus needs to be on the Lord in all areas of our lives, as well as the people God gives us to do life with. When facing fears of overcoming or anxious feelings about the task ahead, we can be brave and be allow the Jesus light to shine as we walk our own tightropes in life.

“Don’t listen to those lies in your head that are holding you back from greatness.
Chase your dreams. You are made for so much more.” Nik Wallenda

The Wallenda’s show us three things about our Christian walk that will help us on the road to Christian perfection:

  1. Never give up.
  2. Praise Him as you struggle.
  3. He put those dreams in you and He will show you how to succeed at them.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap,
if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9, ESV
)

What are you choosing today?

Prayer: Lord we know there are times we feel along. Help us to focus on your love, grace, and steadfast, constant care as we go through our days. May our focus be on you, your calling on us, and in praise with those who we do life with. I pray this in Jesus’ holy name, amen.
