The beginning of the Advent is upon us. We lit the first Purple Candle of Hope at church yesterday as we turn our attention to the upcoming birth of the baby Jesus: The first candle is sometimes called the Prophet’s candle representing the Old Testament prophets such as Isaiah. These prophets waited in hope for the coming of the promised Messiah.
Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will be called Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14
My friend once told me that hope is at the heart of giving light in the darkness. So the first candle of Hope is lit and we contemplate the upcoming birth of the Christ child. As we allow the light to eliminate the darkness in our hearts and minds, and like the prophets of old, we can have hope.
Won’t you let in the Light of the World? He wants to give you hope.
Prayer: Father, as we celebrate the season of Advent, let us be mindful of the hope you have given us every day. Thank you for Your love and for sending us your son. Help us remember to spread hope to the lost and broken people around us.In Jesus’ name, Amen
