The second candle of Advent is called the Bethlehem Candle. It represents our faith and the Peace that we have as we live in the body of Christ. The prophet Micah foretold of the Christ child’s humble beginnings over 700 years ago:
But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times. Micah 5:2
Bethlehem was definitely not on anyone’s list of places to see before I die. It was an insignificant place and no one would have been guessing the Prince of Peace was about to be born there. God chose Bethlehem as a way to show us that even the least of us is chosen. It matters not where you come from and you are chosen.
As we light the Bethlehem candle, let’s turn our thoughts toward the upcoming birth of Christ. In between the holiday parties and pageants and such, pause to think of the significance of Bethlehem.
Will you open your Bethlehem heart to the Prince of Peace?
Prayer: Father God we ask for your peace this day as we ponder in our hearts like Mary, the birth of your son. Prepare our hearts with your peace and help us as we share with others during this season of Advent. May our hearts be open to your calling. In Jesus’ name, Amen
