“Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.” (John 17:17, NLT)
Today’s verse comes in a very important piece of Scripture. It is in the midst of Jesus’ prayer for all of His followers (present and future) to God the Father. Jesus asked that we would be made holy by God’s truth. To put it simply, the word, holy, means, set apart. Jesus wanted His followers to be set apart from the world. This is critically important, because as He states in His prayer, He is sending all of us out into the world to help spread God’s truth.
We need that prayer, don’t we? The darkness of the culture is trying to consume the things of God, but it can’t. Since it can’t, it aims to discredit us, spreading lies and fear. Perhaps no one experienced this more profoundly than the Apostle Peter. Remember that Peter was the one who Jesus said wold be the rock upon which His Church would be built. When things got tough, however, Peter was consumed with fear and denied Jesus. Yet, thanks to Jesus’ forgiveness, mercy, and grace, Peter was restored, and went on to write about the call to holiness…
“But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, ‘You must be holy because I am holy.'”
(1 Peter 1:15-16, NLT)
Peter knew about holiness, because he allowed fear to consume him. When he met the truth of God in the form of the Resurrected Christ, he knew his life could never be the same. Jesus — who referred to Himself specifically as truth in John 14:6 — wants to bestow His holiness on us all…we must choose to accept it and live into it. When you do, it will leave you changed, forever!
Prayer: Dear Lord, I want to be holy, set apart for you. Please forgive me for the times I allow the darkness of the world to consume me. I accept your truth, and seek to live a life that is holy and true for you. I ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
