“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12, NIV)
I was struck by reading today’s verse after doing some personal study in philosophy. I was particularly intrigued by how a lot of philosophy describes evil as something impersonal that more-or-less just “is”. Friends, don’t let that deceive you. The enemy is very real, and his key trick is deception. Satan wants you to think he isn’t actively in the world, but that is a lie; in fact, Jesus Himself referred to Satan as the father of lies (John 8:44).
1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (NIV). This certainly isn’t a depiction of an impersonal, passive presence in the world. This certainly isn’t a depiction of an impersonal, passive presence in the world.
The good news is you aren’t helpless when it comes to the scheming of the evil one…not at all! Ephesians 6:13 tells us, “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand” (NIV).
You can trust God to be with you and protect you. You need not fear. Suit up with the Lord, and stand strong!
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for loving me. I acknowledge there are definite times when I don’t see evil as a force out to get your children. Forgive me, and bless me with your armor to stand strong when that’s all I can do. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
