Rewards

by Mary Stout

The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.

The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.

The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. Psalm 19:7-8

Do you remember how excited Ralphie was when he got his secret decoder ring in the movie classic,  A Christmas Story? He couldn’t wait to find out what the message was, could he?

When I came across today’s passage I got excited. Much like Ralphie’s secret decoder ring, this passage gives up one of God’s secrets to living our lives under His commands and precepts. God not only gives us commands and precepts to guide us,  in this Psalm it says when we do we will reap great rewards.

First, following God refreshes our soul. It renews our spirit and brings us peace. We are less likely to be anxious when we get into the habit of spending time with Him and following what He says in His word.

Secondly, when we do the right thing in our walk with God, we will be wise. With wisdom, our ability to handle life is increased and we are less likely to stumble when we have God’s word in our heart. It’s amazing how many instances I find just the right thing in a passage when I am searching for an answer.

When you find this place, you realize you are centered on things more precious than gold. All the riches in this world will not be as valuable to you as your relationship with God. He satisfies our longings as nothing else can do.

Prayer: Lord, help me and guide me as I walk in your precept and share the good news with others. Amen
