If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.” John 15:18-19
I remember a lady was moaning about the National Day of Prayer and how people would be “standing on street corners ready to bash us with signs and eternal damnation”. She said angrily. It was if she thought by offering to pray for people, Christians were going to drag her in by her ankles and make her do what we wanted. I thought that was an odd response, but then the world does not respond to Christians very well these days. I listened to her for a bit, and honestly, I understood. No one enjoys being brow beaten into anything. After she finished, I quietly asked, “If it was a National day of Meditation and Buddhists were sitting on the street corners offering mediation to those who walked by, would you still be so upset?” She was taken aback by what I asked but thanked me for helping her rethink her perspective.
Jesus knew we would have days like this. The world hated Him before we came along. It is comforting to know that even when the world does not like us or even hates us, we can respond with grace and love…because that is precisely what Jesus did. We don’t belong to the world we were chosen to come out of it and be His.
What did Jesus say? I can just imagine him looking at each of the disciples and saying, “Follow me.” “I will make you fishers of men.”
He didn’t need a bull horn or signs or anything. He just preached and did what the Father wanted Him to do. The miracles, the sermons, the acts of grace and love He gave to all were rather attractive. He was here to serve us, love us, teach us and die for us. He was here to teach us how it is done.
Carry on Christian, Carry on.
Prayer: Father God we thank you for reminding us to walk like Jesus. May our walk reflect your glory with every step we take. In Jesus’ name Amen.
