“Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality.” (Romans 12:11-13, MSG)
Tony Robbins once said that, “Passion is the genesis of genius.” It reminds me of the English proverb, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Essentially, these ideas teach that miracles can happen when a burden meets a brainstorm.
Today’s passage from Romans 12 is one I turn to during the times when I feel a bit sluggish. The Apostle Paul’s instruction is to stay fueled and aflame as a prevention for burnout. Here are some symptoms of burnout…can you relate to any of them? Chronic fatigue. Sleeplessness. Forgetfulness, lack of attention, and/or focus. Physical symptoms, like heart palpitations, shortness of breath, gastrointestinal pain, dizziness, fainting, and/or headaches. Increased illness. Changes in eating, whether it is a loss of appetite or binge eating. Anger, which if it isn’t handled properly, contributes to anxiety and depression. I’m sure many of us have experienced these at one time or another, but one thing I think we all can agree on is any of the symptoms can cause us to lose focus at best, and faith at worst, in such a way that it impedes our ability to serve.
There is a miracle that happens, though, when we give our burdens to God — He transforms these things from those that hold us back to the things that propel us forward, knowing we must serve God by serving others. The Holy Spirit will give you brainstorms for ways to meet your burdens, and beat back the symptoms of burnout.
Look for God to give you the passion to be the genesis of your genius. May it inspire your inventiveness for taking care of others. I hope you will feel the mighty transformation of the burdens that hold you back to the burdens that propel you forward.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for being inventive with me, giving me a passion for something that moves you so it may move me closer to you. By the power of your Holy Spirit, I pray that I don’t let myself get burned out, and if I do, that I turn to you to refuel and reignite my own spirit. I ask this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
