You Belong

By Mary Stout

What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it—we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are. But that’s also why the world doesn’t recognize us or take us seriously, because it has no idea who he is or what he’s up to.

1 John 3:1 MSG

Recently I was cleaning out stuff and I came across an old Christmas card that was given to me by close friends. As I opened it and read the signatures filled with much love and well wishes for me, I began to tear up a little as I read these words: You Belong! Those words were the reason I kept the card. A year later and a little wiser, I can definitely say yes I do belong.

Our scripture reminds us we belong to God. We are no longer of this world but have been adopted into the family by virtue of God’s love for us through his son, Jesus.

Let’s be honest: some days the world is pretty hard on us. The people who are in the world don’t understand us. The world needs Jesus. As this holiday season begins, let’s do something about showing Jesus to the world.

I can already hear you saying, but I’m giving already for those who don’t have, I’m visiting others who are shut ins, I’m doing all I can. Keep doing it. Let’s just add one thing to your day and see the difference it makes in your life and in the lives in your corner of the world.

When you wake up, start your day as John Wesley did in his covenant prayer. As you commit to this, may you find your place in the family of God and truly believe you belong.

Wesley’s Covenant Prayer

.

I am no longer my own, but yours.

Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will;

put me to doing, put me to suffering;

let me be employed by you, or laid aside for you,

exalted for you, or brought low by you;

let me be full, let me be empty,

let me have all things, let me have nothing:

I freely and fully yield all things to your pleasure and disposal.

And now, glorious and blessed God,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

you are mine and I am yours. So be it.

And the covenant which I have made on earth,

let it be confirmed in heaven. Amen.
